Answering stoma care questions
I don't know much about stoma care; how much can you advise us?
As much as you need. We know this can be unfamiliar territory, so we’re always happy to talk things through, answer your questions and guide you gently, with no pressure.
Can you help if my loved one is newly adjusting to a stoma?
Absolutely. The early days can feel like a lot, so we’re there with gentle, patient support, helping your loved one grow more comfortable and confident with their stoma at their own pace, and helping your family feel steadier too.
How can the staff help with the stoma?
Our care staff can support your loved one however they need, from changing and emptying the stoma bag to caring for the skin around the site. Whether that’s full hands-on help or just a little reassurance, we shape our care around them.
What are the staff allowed to do?
Our care staff are trained to support with routine stoma care, including bag changes and site care. Some clinical tasks need a stoma nurse, and we’ll always be clear about what’s included and help you access specialist support when it’s needed.
What happens if the stoma bag leaks or there's an accident?
Leaks and accidents happen, and there’s nothing to feel embarrassed about. Our care staff handle them calmly and discreetly, getting your loved one clean, comfortable and reassured as quickly as possible.
How quickly can stoma care start?
Often sooner than families expect. Once we understand your loved one’s needs, we’ll work to get the right care staff in place as quickly as possible. If you’re arranging support around a hospital discharge, just let us know, and we’ll do everything we can to be ready in time.
