A real recovery story

When EG had a stroke, she went from being fully independent to needing significant support with everyday life. After a hospital stay and a period of rehabilitation, she came home under the care of the Stroke Intermediate Care and Support team, and our carers began visiting four times a day.

At first, EG needed help with almost everything – washing, dressing, and preparing meals cut into bite-sized pieces to make them manageable. She used a Zimmer frame to move around her home, though she remained independent with her medication throughout.

As the months went on, EG’s confidence and mobility grew. She started getting around more easily, and when she moved into a bungalow with full access to a wet room, everyday tasks became easier still. Her care package reduced step by step – from four calls a day down to two, and now to just one 30-minute visit most evenings.

Today, EG gets herself up, showered and dressed independently each morning. Our carers are still there for the things that matter – preparing meals and keeping her comfortable at home – but the distance she’s travelled speaks for itself.

FAQs about post-operative care at home

What's the difference between reablement and ongoing home care?

Reablement is short-term and goal-focused, helping your loved one get back on their feet after illness, injury or a hospital stay. Ongoing home care is steady, everyday support for the longer term. Many families start with reablement and move into ongoing care if it helps.

Reablement is about helping your loved one do more for themselves, so our care staff won’t simply do everything for them. Wherever it’s safe, we’ll gently encourage and support them to do things on their own, since that’s how confidence and independence come back.

It depends on your loved one’s recovery. Reablement is short-term and goal-focused, often lasting a few weeks, with regular reviews along the way. As your loved one grows stronger and needs us less, we’ll gradually step back.

It varies. After a hospital stay, many people are eligible for NHS or council-funded intermediate care, while others arrange private support. Ask the hospital team or your local council what your loved one may be entitled to, and we’re happy to talk through private options.

It depends on your loved one’s recovery. Many regain enough independence to manage on their own again. If some ongoing support would still help, we can move smoothly into regular home care, often with the same familiar faces, so there’s no sudden drop-off.
